Turbidity

Turbidity is the cloudiness of water due to suspended particles
(gravel, sand, silt, clay, algae)
(settled/suspended)

Turbidity limits sunlight and alters the photosynthetic activity of plants and algae. Thus leading to plant die-off, oxygen depletion and fish kills

ISO 7027 Nephlometric Sensor

LED at 860nm wavelength sends light down an optical fiber and into the water

Optical fibers are set at an included angle of 90 degrees

Light scatters off the particles

Light that is scattered at 90 degrees is measured by the photo diode

Sunlight is rejected by measuring the photo diode signal with the LED on and off

Units of measure

NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Units)

low turbidity, high turbidity
