In regions impacted by water insecurity, water quality monitoring can be foundational in improving water treatment and informing environmental regulations that protect source water. Helen Baulch, an associate professor at the School of Environment and Sustainability at the University of Saskatchewan, relies on real-time water quality monitoring systems in her work, focusing on making the region more water secure. Challenge: Worsening Water Quality and Water Insecurity While natural physical properties worsen some of the poor water quality conditions in the region, others are connected to land use. Most of Baulch's work has focused on Buffalo Pound Lake, a source water resource that supplies drinking water to two cities.High nutrient loads and organic carbon in Buffalo Pound Lake have deteriorated its water quality over time. Additionally, the lake is very shallow, so it stratifies periodically, which can influence its chemical and physical properties. The main concern for Baulch is cyanobacterial behavior in the lake, as well as the impacts of dissolved organic carbon on disinfectant byproducts.

The Center for Human GeoEnvironmental Studies (CHNGES) at Western Kentucky University (WKU) works with organizations to develop environmental monitoring solutions. Dr. Jason Polk started CHNGES at WKU after recognizing a need in his industry to help create and manage long-standing environmental monitoring programs.Polk specializes in water resources and climate research, karst environments, and reconstruction of the environment. CHNGES focuses on understanding human and societal interactions as well as various environmental issues through monitoring and research. Applied research and working with communities have been the basis for all of Polk's monitoring solutions over the years.He explains, "I can study glaciers in Iceland, I can study caves in Belize, I can study, you know, groundwater right here in Kentucky, we've done work with ag communities and impacts in Vietnam—it's been really interesting and neat to be able to do work in all these different countries in these areas and see that linkage and that thread of applied research." The Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission, an interstate commission representing eight states and the federal government, has launched an Ohio River data buoy called the AMI (Advanced Measurement Initiative Buoy).ORSANCO needed to design and implement an early warning detection and water quality monitoring system for the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers in Pennsylvania. These two rivers supply drinking water for approximately 1.3 million residents throughout western Pennsylvania and are critically important to the state's well being.As the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers creates the Ohio River, it was imperative that a system be developed with the capability of detecting and tracking any possible contamination in either of the two tributaries. To achieve this, ORSANCO and NexSens Technology worked together to create a system that combines both human and automated efforts to establish an effective water quality monitoring program on the rivers.
