Near the small town of Concrete, Washington, there’s a dam on the Lower Baker River holding back its water. The dam is owned by Puget Sound Energy, a company that delivers electric power and natural gas to customers in the U.S. Northwest.For some time, the hydrology surrounding the dam has been of interest to engineers at the energy company who oversee its operations as part of a hydroelectric asset. In particular, they want to know how water moves in soils and rocks around the Lower Baker Dam.To get at the answers to their questions, officials with the energy company contracted Tetra Tech, an environmental consultant, to devise a hydrology tracking solution. Michigan’s Muskegon Lake Sentinel

In 1985, Muskegon Lake was designated an Area of Concern by the U.S. EPA because of water quality and habitat problems associated with pollution discharged into its waters. The water body, which sits between the eastern shore of Lake Michigan and the Muskegon River, has been the site of remediation work ever since.In line with work to bring the lake back from its status as an Area of Concern, scientists at Grand Valley State University launched a massive data-collection system in spring 2011. Comprised of two buoys and dozens of sensors to measure the lake’s health, the system is cluing researchers in to Muskegon Lake’s dynamics like never before.What’s more, the system is helping scientists at the EPA and elsewhere track the progress of work to restore the lake while giving teachers in nearby schools a real-world example to help their students learn scientific principles.

Drinking Water Early Warning System

Drinking water supplies in the United States are an extremely valuable national asset and are vital to our country's survival. During the past few years, these resources have been thrust into the national spotlight as government agencies have placed an increased emphasis on their surveillance and protection.Prompted by this initiative to monitor drinking water quality, the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission recently completed the design and implementation of an early warning detection and water quality monitoring system for the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers in Pennsylvania. These two rivers supply drinking water to approximately 1.3 million residents throughout western Pennsylvania and are critically important to the state's wellbeing.As the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers creates the Ohio River, it was imperative that a system be developed that was capable of detecting and tracking any possible contamination in either of the two rivers that could affect drinking water. To achieve this, ORSANCO created a system that combines both human and automated efforts to establish effective water quality monitoring programs on the rivers.
