For NOAA, that means testing and developing new ways to monitor in the region’s waters.Since the Alaskan offshore is a new locale for the observation network, researchers at NOAA are working out the kinks of monitoring there before any expensive sensors are placed in the Gulf of Alaska. They have a straightforward solution for long-term stations ready to go, and have turned their attention toward developing short-term platforms that can perform reliably in the harsh region.

Newly designed cruise vessels are longer, wider and packed with more amenities to give guests the best trips possible. But there are costs to larger ships moving in and out of the world’s ports.In Bermuda, an island nation whose economy runs on tourism, its ports have felt the impacts of the shift. Government officials there eventually realized that the larger cruise ships in construction these days simply couldn’t squeeze through their navigation channels.In response to this, the officials contracted a dredging company to clear out the nation’s North Channel area in October 2015. To minimize environmental impacts of the dredging operations, the government worked with CH2M HILL, an environmental consultant, to oversee monitoring efforts around the dredge. CH2M HILL contracted Bermuda Environmental Consulting to carry out monitoring around the operations, relying on NexSens data buoys to complete the work.

Presque Isle State Park gets more visitors annually than most national parks, and many of those visitors come for the area’s beaches and fishing. Before they get to the sandy, lagoon-spotted area, many check conditions online thanks to a buoy launched by the Regional Science Consortium.Locals from Erie, Pennsylvania who frequent Lake Erie’s waters off Presque Isle use the buoy’s data as well, which reveal changes to wave height and frequency in real time. In addition, visitors to the buoy’s website can view recent 10-second video clips and track weather conditions on the lake.Charter captains use the buoy’s measurements to plan for additional fuel costs when the waters are rough, and recreational boaters rely on its data to spare them the hassle of trailering up to the lake only to find unsafe conditions. Data from the buoy are also contributed to the National Data Buoy Center, which assists the National Weather Service in forecasting
