Lake associations and individual researchers teaming up means more comprehensive and impactful monitoring programs. Lake Lillinonah in Connecticut has the benefit of being the subject of many researchers' work as well as being under the protection of Friends of the Lake (FOTL).Jen Klug, Professor of Biology in the College of Arts and Sciences at Fairfield University, is one of these researchers and works with FOTL to better understand what conditions threaten Lake Lillinonah—a mission shared by FOTL. Challenge: Nutrient Loading and High Production in Lake Lillinonah Lake Lillinonah is in particular need of protection due to excess nutrient loads leading to hypoxia and algal blooms. The goal behind monitoring the lake is to help provide the FOTL with water quality data to help support their advocacy.

Measuring Light Attenuation in Missouri Reservoirs

Missouri reservoirs serve as critical water resources, yet these reservoirs suffer from harmful algal blooms, which can make water treatment difficult and influence the use of the water bodies. Understanding why lakes turn green is one of the first steps to learning more about HABs and how to better respond to them. Rebecca North, an associate professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia, has dedicated her career to studying the very phenomenon.Seasonal dynamics can play a role in how blooms are formed across the year, with cyanobacterial communities growing even in the winter. In order to better understand the role of seasonal dynamics, particularly winter variability, North has teamed up with other lake researchers to conduct a year-round multi-lake study. Challenge: Data-sharing and Viability The multi-lake study, appropriately named the Thin Ice Project, includes dozens of lakes, all of which experience varying degrees of ice cover throughout the year. The goal of the study is to monitor these lakes throughout the year and observe how winter dynamics influence the rest of the year, particularly algal blooms.

Harmful Algal Bloom Monitoring and Modeling with Real-Time Technology

In 2022, Otsego Lake in New York became one of many lakes to experience its first cyanobacterial bloom. While the cause is still unknown, the blooms may be an indicator of various water quality issues resulting from invasive species, runoff events or other environmental stressors. To get to the bottom of the mystery, Kiyoko Yokota, an associate professor of biology with the State University of New York (SUNY) at Oneonta, has spent the past several years researching the lake and supporting local management strategies and organizations.Yokota serves as the president of the North American Lake Management Society, scientific advisor for the Otsego Lake Watershed Supervisory Committee and technical advisor for the Otsego Lake Association, all of which support conservation efforts on the lakes.Currently, Yokota is working with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to develop the Nine Element Plan, a comprehensive lake and watershed management plan. The goal of the plan is to create a long-term strategy to protect both Otsego Lake and the surrounding watershed. This strategy will be periodically evaluated for its efficacy and revised as needed. The evaluation uses watershed and lake models to be built with both manually collected snapshot data and high-frequency sensor data. Challenge: Gathering High-Frequency Data Remotely
