Tom Ridge Environmental Center adds Weather Network to Research Tools

The Tom Ridge Environmental Center
The Tom Ridge Environmental Center (TREC), located at the entrance to Presque Isle State Park in Erie, Pennsylvania, recently installed a NexSens real-time radio weather station network to add to the environmental educational and research tools within the Center.
Two site locations were selected within the Presque Isle State Park to monitor weather. The first weather station location was selected near Presque Isle's Lake Erie shoreline, while a second weather station location was selected on top of the TREC's 75 foot tall glass tower.
To measure multiple weather parameters at both sites, the Vaisala WXT510 multi-parameter weather sensor and LI-COR 200 Pyranometer were selected. These sensors simultaneously measure wind speed & direction, liquid precipitation, barometric pressure, temperature, relative humidity, and global solar radiation, sending the data at periodic intervals to a radio base station with the TREC.
The real-time radio systems were selected by researchers at the Regional Science Consortium (RSC), which is one of one of the many educational and research organizations establishing residence in the TREC.
RSC is a collaborative, non-profit organization that focuses on and coordinates educational and research projects for Lake Erie and the upper Ohio River Basin. The Consortium's objective is to have all branches of science working together to share expertise, equipment and ideas with researchers, students, and other interested parties.
TREC is open year-round, offering visitors an insight to what they can expect to experience at Presque Isle State Park and the surrounding Great Lakes Region. The Environmental Center also serves as a center for research and helps to preserve the beauty of Presque Isle, the site of Pennsylvania's only seashore.
