Hydroelectric Plant Installs Dissolved Oxygen Process Monitoring System

The Racine Hydroelectric Plant recently contracted NexSens Technology to assist with the installation and implementation of a dissolved oxygen process monitoring system with real-time data telemetry. The system replaces an existing DO monitor that had become irreparable.

The system consists of an ATI Q45D Dissolved Oxygen Monitor with an Auto-Clean air blast DO sensor and a NexSens 2100-iSIC data logger with landline modem. The DO sensor is mounted within a Schedule 80 PVC flow cell to continually provide a fresh water sample.

The 2100-iSIC system logs dissolved oxygen data, sending it via landline telephone to a PC running iChart software in the Plant Control Room. Automatic alarm notifications are sent via email to plant engineers when dissolved oxygen readings fall below 5 mg/L.

On-site, the Q45D's LCD display allows plant engineers to view live DO concentration and temperature readouts and perform on-site DO sensor calibrations. Air and sample sensor calibrations allow compensation for temperature, barometric pressure, and salinity.

Throughout the years, the Racine Plant has continually monitored dissolved oxygen in the Ohio River to ensure that levels do not fall out of regulation. By utilizing the automation and data processing capabilities of the NexSens system, plant officials have greatly increased DO process monitoring efficiency.

The Racine Hydroelectric Plant borders Ohio and West Virginia along the Ohio River and has been in commission since 1967. The plant is owned and operated by The American Electric Power Company.
